The Grand Hotel is situated on the Gulf Coast, an area rich with history, scenic beauty, and steamy romance. First opened in 1847 as the Point Clear Hotel, the original hotel was accessible only by boat. Known as "The Queen of Southern Resorts, " the hotel was a favorite ~ among the southern gentility, who enjoyed parties, balls, and high-stakes poker games there. During the Civil War, the hotel served as an encampment and field hospital for Confederate soldiers. When the hotel opened for business after the war, a fire destroyed the kitchen and the main building. No guests were harmed, but all the records from the war were lost. Now the hotel maintains a Confederate Memorial Cemetery, where 150 unknown soldiers rest.
The property changed hands several times, with new owners making several improvements, but then the hotel was severely damaged by a hurricane. Soon thereafter, the hotel was bought by Marriott, which restored and improved the resort while retaining its history and charm. Now the hotel sits on 550 acres of manicured grounds, shaded by flowering magnolias and mossy oaks. Nearby are the lush foliage and charming homes of the Point Clear Historic District.
Three separate buildings offer guest accommodationsoverlooking the bay, marina, and surrounding gardens. All 306 rooms are newly renovated with careful attention to period detail. You can dance in the moonlight at Julep Point, or go for a walk along the waterfront. Pavilion Wharf offers exceptional fishing and crab trapping, and the chef will gladly prepare anything you catch. Point Clear Stables provide thoroughbred horses for riding along more than five miles of trails. Paddle boats, wave runners, and sailboats are all available for use on the Bay. Lakewood Golf course offers some of the best golf in the area. And the hotel's elegant 111-foot yacht, Southern Comfort, is the place for watching a spectacular sunset, or enjoying cocktail and dinner cruises under the southern moonlight.
The Grand Dining Room is formal yet relaxed, serving lavish breakfast and luncheon buffets, along with the legendary Sunday champagne jazz brunch. The Bayview Room offers great local seafood cooked to your taste and an exquisite view of Mobile Bay. The Clubroom at the golf course provides a country club atmosphere for more casual lunches. Afternoon tea is served in the rustic elegance of the main lobby every day.
The Grand Hotel combines southern hospitality with modern comforts, offering a vast array of amenities and activities in an environment of unparalleled historic charm.
