Some romantics, like Glare, find love in wild nature. If the two of you would like to revel in the splendid isolation of the Alaskan wild country, then Kachemak Bay is the place.
Accessible only by floatplane or ferry, this wilderness resort is situated on the spectacular Kenai Peninsula. A perfect spot for nature lovers who also want some luxury, the lodge is about a half an hour from Homer, but offers all the comforts (and more) of home while providing exciting activities in the wilds of Alaska. You can go hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Get steamed in the sod-roofed sauna. Eat Dungeness crab that was pulled out of the bay that morning, along with homemade bread baked daily.
Kachemak is a family affair, managed with friendly hospitality and attention to detail. Mike and Diane McBride have been running the lodge for more than 20 years. Mike's a member of the Explorer's Club, a former bush pilot, a licensed skipper, and an expert on Alaska's wilderness. Diane knows all about the natural history of the area. In addition to being perfect hosts, both of them are helpful guides, always willing to answer your questions about the nature and history of this fascinating region.
Each of the four log cabins has a wood-burning stove, homemade quilts, and a porch. There's a stone fireplace in the main lodge and a private outdoor hot tub and sauna. And beyond that, nothing but spruce tree forests and pristine beaches. The wildlife is varied-with seals, sea birds, moose, bear, sea otters, whales, and bald eagles all nearby. And the region is home to the world's largest concentration of black bears. The McBrides offer photography workshops and guided nature tours. Or you can dig for clams and mussels on the beach. The fishing is some of the best in the world, offering trout, salmon, and halibut. The Kenai Peninsula is one of Alaska's most photographed places; when you arrive there, you might find that you recognize it from books or calendars.
Kachemak is listed in America's Best 100 as "America's best wilderness lodge."
