A dramatic coastline of mountains and cliffs rising up from the ocean. The secluded beauty of unspoiled beaches and deep forest wilderness. Brilliant sunshine, the spray of salt water, spectacular sunsets, and quiet, starry nights. That's Big Sur, an unforgettable place and one of the most unique natural areas in the country.
The clock runs differently at Big Sur. You won't be hurried or harried. There will be no distractions or interruptions. You'll be able to enjoy each other in a peaceful "earthly" environment. Perhaps this is why Ed McMahon likes to come here for a romantic getaway.
The place to stay at Big Sur is Post Ranch Inn, a romantic country inn nestled in a mountain meadow with a spectacular ocean view. Post Ranch Inn enjoys some of the most dramatic meetings of land and sea in the world.
The entrance to the inn and its ninety-eight-acre grounds is located right off Highway One in Big Sur. After you arrive at the reception office, a van will take you up the winding road that leads to a secluded bluff where the thirty guest villas are located. Some of these are eccentric-ally designed, like the ones built on stilts, or covered in sod roofs. However they all blend harmoniously into the landscape, and inside they offer the most modern conveniences.
All the guest quarters have fireplaces, jacuzzis, wet bars, refrigerators, and private decks with spectacular views so you can absorb the surrounding beauty. The rooms have high ceilings and walls of stone and wood, with lots of windows to enjoy the view.
At the main lodge, a nonsmoking dining room offers a gorgeous view from a huge picture window. There is also a terrace bar, with a sweeping view of the ocean and mountains. The first-rate cuisine is complemented by an extensive wine list.
There is a lot to do in the Big Sur area. Hiking, swimming, and horseback riding are among the local activities. Or you can just kick back and do nothing at all.
