Until the mid-1980s, few people knew of Telluride, Colorado. Until then, this old gold town's mountain was frequented by hard-core skiers seeking steep slopes and deep powder. However, the secret of Telluride soon leaked out and those tired of Aspen's glitz began to frequent Telluride to enjoy skiing in this beautiful box canyon. To cater to these Aspen refugees, the Peaks at Telluride has evolved into one of the world's best mountain resorts.
Located mid-mountain at an altitude of 9,500 feet, the Peaks at Telluride commands breathtaking views of the surrounding San Juan Range and its 14,000 foot peaks. Before skiing, Telluride earned fame as the site of Butch Cassidy's first bank robbery, and the feeling of the Old West is carried on at the Peaks. The doorman, decked out in cowboy hat, leather riding gloves, flannel shirt, and range coat, greets you with a warm welcome. Inside you'll find a lobby enhanced by spectacular views from its large picture window, warmed by a charming stone fireplace, and filled with overstuffed chairs and sofas and dazzling rugs. In your room, you'll discover a down comforter, entertainment center, oversized marble bath, and a view that by itself justifies your stay.
The main attraction at the Peaks is the skiing. Located at mid-mountain, the Peaks offers the convenience of a ski-in/ski-out lounge. In the morning, a valet will fetch your skis-which were tuned the night before-and your boots, which are warmed for your comfort.
After a few days of skiing, many guests find themselves heading for the Peaks' full-service spa. Covering 42,000 square feet, the fitness center at the Peaks spans four floors and includes forty-four treatment rooms and an indoor seventy-five-foot lap pool. Among the many services offered are a Cybex weight center, aromatherapy massage, après ski facials, and eucalyptus-scented steam rooms. If skiing or the spa don't catch your fancy, ask the concierge to arrange a snowmobile trip to an abandoned mining town. Or if you don't care for winter at all, return in the spring or summer and enjoy the Peaks' champion-ship golf course and excellent tennis facilities.
Whichever season you visit, be sure to dine at the hotel's Legends of the Peaks restaurant which serves flavor-infused American and spa cuisine.
