Live on an island!
This resort has a history worth telling. The Jekyll Island Club was incorporated in 1886 by some of society's wealthiest elite including Astor, Gould, Rockefeller, Morgan, and Pulitzer as a place to form a winter hunting retreat. Over the years, condominiums were built by some of these wealthy men and others. However the island access was closed during World War II by the federal government, and after that period, the wealthy never returned. In the late '40s, the island was sold to the State of Georgia, and it was in 1978 that the 240-acre club was designated a National Historic Landmark. Seven years later, restoration began on the facilities.
Today you can enjoy the original grandeur of this exclusive retreat as Rockefeller and Morgan once did. Rooms at the Club are furnished with antique reproductions including two-poster mahogany beds, armoires, desks, tables and chairs, and sofas with rich fabrics. Many rooms feature fireplaces and/or Jacuzzis and an array of bathroom amenities.
Club guests can choose from a variety of activities including a surfside Beach Club, sixty-three holes of golf, nine tennis courts (one indoor and five lighted), lawn games, a marina, and elegant shopping. There are also ten miles of beach, twenty miles of bicycling and jogging trails, and a health club. In addition, guests can enjoy other nearby golfing experiences, horseback riding, skeet and trap shooting, boating, and deep sea fishing at area facilities.
Couples looking for a magical getaway should try the Club's Romantic Fantasy which includes two nights deluxe accommodations with Jacuzzi, continental champagne breakfast, long stem roses at turndown, gourmet chocolates upon arrival, picnic lunch (one day), complimentary tennis and bicycles (one day), and a commemorative photograph.
