Created by a volcano, the island of Santorini rises from the Aegean Sea in a series of steep cliffs. For centuries, life on this island was hard, with earthquakes toppling buildings with relative frequency. Finally, after a 1956 earthquake, the Greek government stepped in and decided to modernize the island. This brought with it a great surge in tourism. Now the island is home to booming discos and large hotels, yet the most romantic spot in the Aegean lies carved into a cliffside. This spot is the innovative and charming hideaway of Perivolas.
With only fourteen rooms, Perivolas is dwarfed by the island's large hotels. Each room is housed in a tiny lit-tie cottage called a skafta. The skaftas are carved out of the cliff face and are decorated with elegant simplicity. Each vaulted-ceiling skafta features a bedroom, a sitting area, a well-equipped kitchenette, and a domed bathroom. Most importantly, each has its terrace with magnificent views of the Caldera which serves as the perfect place to hold hands and enjoy a romantic sunset. After a blissful night's sleep, descend down the steps to the pool and the breakfast skafta, and enjoy a hearty meal as the rising sun begins to dance on the sea's surface.
