Positano was once a powerful commercial town. Its pastel-and-white houses perched above the sparkling azure sea now create a serene scene fitting of postcards. Perched also on these cliffs is the award-winning Hotel San Pietro and its dining room.
Actually the Hotel San Pietro is carved out of a cliff. To reach it, you park your car in a nondescript lot near a tiny stone chapel on top of a lonely cliff. Here a member of the staff will greet you and show you to the elevator that will take you down through the cliff to the Hotel San Pietro. Exiting the elevator, you understand why this hotel is named after Saint Peter, guardian of the gates of heaven, for you feel as if somehow a little bit of heaven has been captured here on earth. Every public room, from the lobby to the dining room, is exquisitely decorated and highlighted by an abundance of flora and fauna which give the rooms a very lush quality.
The bedrooms at San Pietro equal the public rooms in their opulence. Hand-painted doors set the tone for these magnificent rooms which are stacked in tiers. The "special" rooms at San Pietro are a romantic's dream.
These are highlighted by tiled floors, and beds with canopies of real vines. The bathrooms are especially luxurious with at least one room boasting a sunken Roman tub the size of a small pool with depths of up to nine feet.
It is in this earthly Eden that you will enjoy magical romance. During the day, you can descend via elevator through the cliff and enjoy San Pietro's private beach. After a day by the sea, savor the fresh pastas, fresh vegetables, and especially the fresh fish that are the staples of the hotel's lovely dining room. The hotel actually has fishermen who work exclusively for it. After dinner, linger and dance under the bougainvillea or drink a nightcap on the terrace as the moon and stars' reflections shimmer on the sea.
