Built in 1900 by wealthy New York journalist General Howard Carroll, the Castle at Tarrytown is based on Scottish and Welsh castles Carroll had seen while traveling abroad. Here guests have a chance to experience the fantasy of staying in a luxurious castle.
Although the exterior looks like a Gothic castle, the interior is elegant and decorated in dark woods that are accented with tapestries, plants, prints, and exquisite antiques. The main house has seven guest rooms and the new wing offers an additional twenty-four rich and comfortable rooms. Try the Linsmore Suite for something extra special. This room is in a turreted tower that is the highest point in Westchester County. The suite features a fireplace and a cut velvet sofa that faces the hearth and a panoramic view of the lush forest that runs down to the Hudson River.
For adventure, take a stroll around the property's ten acres which include an English garden and a rock-carved swimming pool.
Guests have several dining options at the Castle including the Equus Restaurant which has become a popular stop for the locals. The Oak Room offers a more baronial setting while the Tapestry Room's intimate ambiance should appeal to couples. The Garden Room offers expansive views of the river and New York City, and The Terrace is a popular choice for dinner and cocktails in the warmer months.
