Istanbul has long been considered one of the world's great cities. Perched on both sides of the Bosphorus-the crossroads between Asia and Europe-Istanbul enjoys a long and glorious history (including being the capital of the Ottoman Empire).
Completed in 1876, the Ciragan Palace is itself steeped in history. It is here that Sultan Abdul Aziz killed himself and here that Sultan Muran V was imprisoned after he was deposed. Yet despite this troubled past, which also includes a fire, the Ciragan has been remarkably preserved and restored so that you may enjoy its ostentatious luxury just as the Sultans did. Just be sure to book one of the twelve suites in the Sultan's palace so that you may enjoy uninterrupted views of the Bosphorus from your elegant room.
In addition to its rich history and luxurious rooms, Ciragan is also home to the world-famous Tugra restaurant. Tugra's high ceilings and ornate crystal chandeliers set the mood for an evening of romance. However, if it is warm outside, forgo the dining room and enjoy your meal on the terrace. Overlooking the Bosphorus, the terrace is flanked by the palace's marble columns and may be Turkey's best dining spot. However, regardless of your seating location, the food will be excellent. With many recipes taken from the Sultans' cookbooks, Tugra serves classical Ottoman cuisine with flair and style fitting for such an elegant setting.
