Parts of this rambling bed and breakfast date to 1750, its history recognizable in the low ceiling of the foyer. This inn has been in operation since 1811, and several rooms were added through the years. The only interruption of service occurred when it was the home of Abraham Lincoln's granddaughter.
Relaxed Federal decor gives 1811 House a charming and authentic feeling. Stenciled floral borders ring the ceiling, while dozens of horse paintings line the walls. Waterford crystal and the ornately carved chairs of the dining room give this colonial inn a touch of British charm. The pub also has a decidedly British ambiance. Dark, intimate, and decorated with exposed rafters, the pub stocks more than fifty fine single malt scotches.
The B&B's fourteen rooms and one suite are all elegantly appointed. While some of the bathrooms are a bit dated, like the inn itself, each room features gracious English and early American antiques. More modern, but just as charming, are the three cottages that dot the seven-and-a-half acre property. Surrounded by English gardens, terraces, and a pond, the cottages are ideal for romance.
