Located near Woodstock, Twin Farms spreads out over 235 acres. Lewis's house still stands and is the heart of Twin Farms. An all-inclusive retreat, the highlight here is the rooms. The main house has several, the star being the Washington Suite, but the cottages are by far the best lodging available. From the outside, the eight individually designed cottages seem bland. They're painted in the muted greys, greens, and blues of New England and their only apparent luxury is a screened porch. Yet once you cross the threshold, you enter a world of opulent fantasy. Each cottage has a separate theme. One resembles a deluxe log cabin and is decorated with numerous pieces of canine-inspired folk art. Another, known as Meadow, has a decidedly Moroccan theme down to a tented ceiling.

True, you could just jump in your car and drive around, but using one of the bikes is a much better way to observe this splendid phenomenon. You can even arrange to be picked up and brought back to the hotel in time for dinner. During the winter, take advantage of the inn's cross-country ski trails or ice-skating, and in summer, you can golf at the nearby country club. Yes, at Twin Farms, any season is romantic.
