What is it about waterfalls that makes the atmosphere so romantic? Some scientists claim that the water mists put an electrical charge in the air, but that takes the mystery out of the allure of cascading water. Some things are better left unexplained. If you like water-falls but don't want to brave the crowds at Niagara, try the Salish Lodge at Snoqualmie Falls, the "Niagara of the West."
Located about a half hour east of Seattle, the Salish is situated at the crest of the magnificent Snoqualmie Falls, offering a unique combination of comfort and style in an elegant country inn designed to complement the spectacular natural setting. The falls plunge 268 feet-that's more than 100 feet farther than Niagara.
The Lodge has ninety-one guest rooms with custom-designed furniture, luxurious bedspreads, and down comforters. The walls of each room are wood-paneled in native straight fir, and the floors are made of northwesten slate. All rooms have stone-faced wood-burning fireplaces, two-person whirlpool spa tubs with French doors opening out onto the room, and the spectacular view beyond. Most rooms have balconies or patios overlooking the river. There are four suites with parlors and extra bedrooms.
You can relax in the Curtis Library, named after Asahel Curtis, a turn-of-the-century photographer whose original photos are featured there. Or go shopping at the Salish country store, featuring designer clothing and accessories and original northwestern art. The Salish fitness center is located on the roof, offering an outdoor spa and sun deck, sauna, and state-of-the-art exercise equipment. Cuisine at the Lodge features regional game, fish and fowl, and an extensive wine list.
There are two lounges. The Falls Terrace opens onto a large outdoor terrace overlooking the falls. The sweeping panorama of the Attic Lounge, located on the roof level, features nightly live entertainment and dancing as well as some of the Northwest's best light jazz and mood music. Sporting activities include golf, fishing, biking, hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, and cross-country or downhill skiing. Or you can take an unforgettable helicopter picnic and enjoy great Northwest cuisine atop the scenic Mt. Si. The nearby town of Snoqualmie was the inspiration (and provided some of the locations) for David Lynch's avant-garde Twin Peaks television series.
The Salish offers a honeymoon special. A romantic riverside room, champagne served in keepsake glasses, and breakfast in bed, all help to set a romantic mood.
